The Yamaha Portatone PSR16 is a consumer keyboard that offered a real 4op FM tone generator at a budget-friendly price. It came out alongside the PSR6 (which shares the same chassis) and PSR36. The FM engine is the same found on the DX11 and other similar 4op synthesizers of the era, but the editing functionality is very limited: the 32 internal voices can be customized with a set of 4 sliders, controlling some of the characteristics of the sound.
As with other Portatone keyboards, drums accompaniments, auto bass chords with basic sequence recording capabilities and a mono speaker are also included.
