The Yamaha PLS1 allows switching between 4 inputs to be sent to the OUT connection for each of the 8 channels. Up to 99 configurations can be saved to memory and recalled. Line settings can also be adjusted via MIDI program change and memory contents can be saved or loaded via MIDI bulk.

Although the PLS1 is used as an input selector in normal operations, it can also be used as an output selector, which outputs the signal input to the OUT jack of each channel to the OUT jack selected by the SELECT key.
